Release notes

Changelog

Panevisa updates itself and shows these notes when a new version arrives.

  1. 1.3.8

    October 20, 2026

    Latest
    • Dragging a window onto another window makes a tab group again on every display.
    • Float Other Windows for Microsoft Teams now keeps the main Teams window in the layout and floats the meeting window.
    • When you zoom a window, tab strips of other tab groups no longer cover it, and a zoomed tab group keeps its strip right above the window.
    • Software Update and What's New now stay above all other windows and open on the Space you use.
  2. 1.3.7

    October 20, 2026

    • Setup now suggests App Rules for the apps on your Mac and lets you choose a layout, the gap between windows and focus follows mouse. Open it any time with Show Setup Again, or with Suggest Rules for My Apps in App Rules.
    • Sync Settings with iCloud keeps your App Rules, shortcuts, layout, window behavior and colors the same on all your Macs. Turn it on in Settings, Advanced.
  3. 1.3.6

    October 19, 2026

    • Panevisa is now signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple, so macOS opens it without a security warning.
    • After this update, macOS may ask for Accessibility again. Open System Settings, go to Privacy and Security, then Accessibility, and turn Panevisa off and on again.
    • Dragging a window to another monitor now always puts it in that monitor's layout, even when the window was not focused yet or the monitor was empty.
    • Focus follows mouse now waits for the pointer to stop, so moving across a window to reach the menu bar no longer switches apps.
  4. 1.3.5

    October 19, 2026

    • Float Other Windows in App Rules keeps an app's main window tiled and floats every other window of that app.
  5. 1.3.4

    October 19, 2026

    • Zoom Toggle and Step In keep neighboring windows on the same display. The zoomed window covers them instead of pushing them onto another monitor.
  6. 1.3.3

    October 18, 2026

    • Opening a new Ghostty tab in a window that is part of a tab group keeps the group as it is. The new tab takes the window's place in the group instead of joining as a tab or a cell of its own, switching tabs keeps that place, and closing a tab hands the place back to the tab that remains.
    • A Ghostty tab you are not looking at is no longer mistaken for a window on another desktop.
  7. 1.3.2

    October 18, 2026

    • Dragging a floating window, like a dialog, a settings window, your scratchpad or a window shown in every workspace, now just moves it. It no longer shows drop zones, joins a tab group or takes a place in the layout. Tiled windows drag and drop as before.
  8. 1.3.1

    October 18, 2026

    • Tab groups now stay together when you swipe to another desktop and back. Windows on other desktops keep their place, their tab group and its order, and the tab you were looking at is still the one shown when you return.
    • Opening, closing or switching Ghostty tabs in a window that is part of a tab group keeps the group as it is. The tab you switch to takes the window's place in the group.
    • A window leaves its layout only when it really closes. A window on another desktop, or in an app that is slow to answer, keeps its place.
    • Floating windows stay floating when you come back from another desktop.
    • Quitting Panevisa while some windows are on another desktop keeps them in the saved layout. After a restart they rejoin their place and their tab group when you switch back to them.
    • Several windows of one app with the same title, like new Ghostty windows, return to their own places after a restart.
    • Switching desktops no longer rearranges your windows, a quick swipe across several desktops causes one update instead of one per desktop, and tab groups of windows from one app no longer cost a tab scan on every update.
  9. 1.3.0

    October 17, 2026

    • Dialogs, settings windows, small popups, hotkey windows and picture in picture now float by themselves. Panevisa looks at the kind of window, whether it can be resized or zoomed and how small it is, so these windows open where the app puts them and never rearrange your layout. Turn it off in Settings, Windows, or press ⌃⌥F on a window to tile it anyway.
    • App Rules can now match a window's title, either a part of it or a pattern, to float, ignore or tile just those windows. Make Rule for This Window in the menu bar icon's App Rule menu, the command palette or a shortcut adds one for the window in front.
    • Native macOS tabs in apps like Ghostty, Terminal and Finder now share one cell instead of taking a cell each. Switching tabs keeps the cell where it is.
    • A minimized window from a tab group now comes back into its group instead of as a cell of its own.
    • Drag the edge of a tiled window to resize it and its neighbors follow. The new sizes stay with the layout.
    • Cycle Size on ⌃⌥R gives the focused window a third, half or two thirds of its row or column. Balance Sizes on ⌃⌥⇧R evens everything out again. Both work with every layout, including Grid and Main and Stack.
    • Center Window on ⌃⌥C floats the focused window in the middle of the screen.
    • Scratchpad: pick any window with Set Scratchpad Window on ⌃⌥⇧S, then bring it to the middle of the screen and tuck it away with ⌃⌥S.
    • Show in Every Workspace on ⌃⌥A keeps a window floating and its app open when you switch workspaces.
    • Focus Left and Focus Right now move on to the next display at the edge of a layout, and work from floating windows too.
    • Focus follows mouse, off unless you turn it on in Settings, Windows. The tiled window under the pointer gets focus after a short pause you can set. It waits while a menu or popover is open or a mouse button is down, and never raises a floating window or a hidden tab.
    • Show Everything moved from ⌃⌥Space to ⌃⌥E, since macOS uses ⌃⌥Space to switch input sources. If you had changed it, your shortcut stays. A new shortcut that you already use for something else starts empty instead.
    • New in Panevisa 1.3 in Settings, Shortcuts lists every new shortcut right after the essentials.
    • An optional config file at ~/.config/panevisa/config.json holds your shortcuts, rules and window settings as plain text for a dotfiles repository. Create it from Settings, Windows. Settings and the file stay in step, edits apply within a second, and a mistake in one line leaves the rest working. Panevisa never needs it.
    • The panevisa command runs any Panevisa action from Terminal or scripts and prints your windows, displays and workspaces as JSON. Install it from Settings, Windows. It talks only to Panevisa running under your own account, and Pause applies to it as it does to shortcuts.
    • Experimental and off by default: Move to Space shortcuts move the focused window to another Space, and can follow it there, without turning off System Integrity Protection. It relies on parts of macOS Apple doesn't document and may stop working after a macOS update. When macOS won't move the window, Panevisa says so and only switches Space.
  10. 1.2.6

    October 17, 2026

    • Screen recordings now show Panevisa's animations. QuickTime, OBS and screenshots capture the move animation with its blur, the drag preview, tab strips and the focus outline. Panevisa still leaves its own panels out of the snapshots it takes for its animations.
    • The tab strip now always underlines the window you see. When a tab group forms by dragging or with Add to Tab Group, the window you just added is shown, focused and underlined.
    • Picking a hidden tab in the command palette or Overview, or bringing it forward with ⌘` or the app's Window menu, now makes it the shown tab, so its underline follows.
    • Closing a tab no longer moves the underline to a different window. The tab you were looking at stays shown.
    • After a launch, a window coming back from full screen, or reordering tabs by dragging, the focused window and the underlined tab are the same window.
  11. 1.2.5

    October 17, 2026

    • Making a tab group is easier. Drag a window over the middle of another window: the middle now covers a much larger area, and the preview no longer flickers when the cursor is near the border between zones.
    • The drag preview now shows what will happen. A tab group drop is drawn in its own tab group color with a small tab strip of both windows and the words Add to tab group with the app's name. Splits and screen edges use a different color and say where the window goes.
    • New Add to Tab Group on ⌃⌥T puts the focused window in a tab group with the window you used just before it. Remove from Tab Group on ⌃⌥⇧T takes it out again. Both are in the menu, the command palette, Shortcuts and as panevisa://tab/add and panevisa://tab/remove links. In Shortcuts and links you can also name a direction.
    • New Tabs section in Settings to pick the tab group color, a separate split and edge color and the preview strength, with Reset Colors. The colors are included when you export settings. The active tab in tab strips is underlined in the tab group color.
    • VoiceOver announces each drop zone while you drag. With Increase Contrast the preview is drawn stronger, and Reduce Motion turns off its fade.
    • Moves that include windows on another display no longer slow down. In 1.2.4 a slow app could stretch such a move to almost three seconds.
    • Moves start sooner. Panevisa now reuses its list of windows for snapshots instead of asking for a new one every time.
    • Windows that only move or only change size are now set with one call instead of three.
  12. 1.2.4

    October 17, 2026

    • Reorder Back and Forward now work on the layout as it is, so windows opened or closed since the last arrange are no longer dropped or brought back as empty spaces. A tab group moves as one.
    • Tab groups now stay together when App Rules change, when you flip the main side and when you move a window to another display.
    • With more than one display, a window moving to or from another display now slides there smoothly instead of jumping at the end of the animation.
    • Changing the main side in Settings while paused is no longer lost. It is applied when you resume.
    • If a settings file can't be read, Panevisa now keeps it under a new name instead of replacing it with the defaults, and the diagnostics log says so.
    • Updates are only downloaded over a secure connection.
    • When displays briefly disappear during sleep or a display change, Panevisa keeps every display's layout instead of starting over.
    • Clicking the desktop, panels or ignored apps no longer makes Panevisa look through every window, and clicks do nothing at all while paused.
    • Less work at launch when bringing back windows that were off every display, with one clear line in the diagnostics log.
  13. 1.2.3

    October 17, 2026

    • Pause now stops everything. Nothing moves or resizes a window while Panevisa is paused: not new or closed windows, display changes, rules, settings, saved arrangements, links, Shortcuts actions or a move that was already under way when you paused.
    • While paused, shortcuts, menu commands, links and Shortcuts actions that would arrange windows are ignored. The menu bar icon blinks and the diagnostics log says what was ignored. Only the Pause shortcut works, so you can always resume from the keyboard.
    • Tab strips and the focus outline hide while paused. Resuming arranges every display once to catch up.
    • Pausing while Show Desktop has your windows tucked away brings them back first.
    • A window that enters full screen leaves its layout for as long as it stays full screen. In a tab group the next tab shows in its place, and when it leaves full screen it returns to its group and its old position.
    • Panevisa never resizes a full screen window, never switches you to a full screen window's Space by itself, and no longer mistakes a full screen window's size for its smallest size.
    • Tab groups now stay together when windows open or close and the layout is arranged again.
    • Apps that start in the background and show their first window later are now noticed.
    • New windows that take a moment to become ordinary windows are now picked up a little later too.
    • When an Ignore app rule keeps an app's windows out of the layout, the diagnostics log says so once.
  14. 1.2.2

    October 17, 2026

    • Windows slide into place sooner. Panevisa now takes the snapshots of moving windows all at once instead of one after another, so a move starts with less delay.
    • The blur while a window changes size is made once per move from a small copy instead of on every frame, so animations stay smooth with many windows on large displays.
    • Windows are moved in the background while the animation plays, several apps at a time, so a slow app no longer holds up the animation.
    • Animations end when the last movement is too small to see, which takes about a third less time.
    • New Window animation setting in General: Fast, Normal or Off. Off and Reduce Motion move windows straight to their new place without snapshots.
    • Very small moves, such as a one point gap change, skip the snapshots and go straight to their place.
    • The diagnostics log now notes how long each move took in each step, to help find anything still slow.
  15. 1.2.1

    October 17, 2026

    • New Zoom Toggle on ⌃⌥X jumps straight into the focused window and takes you back to exactly the view you were on when you press it again. It is also in the menu, the command palette, Shortcuts and as a panevisa:// link.
    • The Shortcuts settings now open with Essentials, the eight shortcuts you will use most, shown as large keys with one plain line each and still changeable right there. Every other shortcut is grouped below, folded away until you open a group or search.
    • Setup shows the same Essentials in its animated shortcuts page.
    • Unplugging a display no longer piles its windows onto another display's layout for a moment.
    • Closing Settings while a shortcut was being recorded no longer leaves every Panevisa shortcut switched off.
    • An app that stops responding can no longer freeze Panevisa for several seconds at a time.
    • Panevisa now notices new windows from apps that were still starting up when it first looked.
    • A failed or interrupted update download no longer leaves files behind, and a stalled download gives up after ten minutes.
    • Crash reports now carry the time the crash happened instead of the time they were sent.
    • The diagnostics log is capped so it cannot keep growing.
    • Panevisa does much less work while you use other apps: it ignores the many interface changes that are not windows, saves layouts once after a burst of changes instead of after every one, and looks up windows and apps faster.
    • Closing Settings now frees the memory it used.
  16. 1.2.0

    October 17, 2026

    • Optional anonymous crash reports. Setup asks once, and you can change it any time in Settings, General, Privacy. Reports are off unless you turn them on.
    • A crash report only has the Panevisa and macOS versions, where in Panevisa's code the crash happened and a random id. Never your name, files, window titles or anything on screen.
    • Export all your settings to one file and import them on another Mac. Import shows what the file contains, asks first and keeps a backup of your current settings.
    • Each display can have its own gap between windows and its own outer margin, or follow the global gap.
    • An optional outline in your highlight color shows which tiled window has focus. Choose its width in Settings, General.
    • Tabs slide in and out smoothly when you add or close them, instead of the whole tab strip redrawing.
    • Names typed in the Saved Arrangements list in Settings are kept when you click elsewhere, not only when you press Return.
    • The command palette no longer blocks clicks below it.
    • Better VoiceOver support: setup and update titles are headings, errors are read as errors, update progress is announced, and visual overlays stay out of the way.
    • Panevisa does less work in the background and captures only the windows that actually move, so it uses less energy.
  17. 1.1.0

    October 17, 2026

    • Panevisa can now keep itself up to date. It checks for a new version shortly after launch and once a day, and you can check any time with Check for Updates… in the menu.
    • The update window shows what changed in every version since yours, with Install and Relaunch, Remind Me Later and Skip This Version.
    • Every download is checked against Panevisa's signature before anything is replaced, and your current copy stays in place until the new one starts.
    • New Updates settings in General: automatic checking, on by default, and automatic download and install, off by default, plus the time of the last check and your current version.
    • After an update, Panevisa shows what's new in that version once.
  18. 1.0.0

    October 17, 2026

    • Panevisa tiles your windows automatically, with a layout for each display and shortcuts you can change.
    • A friendly setup guide with animated shortcut demos walks you through permissions and the main keys.
    • Save up to nine window arrangements per display, give them names, and bring them back with a shortcut, the menu, the command palette, a panevisa:// link or Shortcuts.
    • Step back and forward through recent arrangements, undo and redo layout changes, and focus on a single window.
    • Minimized windows keep their place, and windows can move to the display on the left or right.
    • Overview shows every window at a glance; type to filter and use the keyboard to pick one.
    • The command palette finds any action, layout or saved arrangement as you type.
    • Hold Option while dragging a window to preview where everything will move before you drop it.
    • Group windows into tabs with a tab strip; drag a tab out to give it its own space.
    • Workspaces, plus arrangements that come back when the same set of displays reconnects.
    • App Rules is one ordered list: prefer an app as the main window, pin it to the left or right, float it, ignore it, or send it to a particular display.
    • Choose which side the main window sits on for each display, and flip it with a shortcut.
    • Every action can have two shortcuts, including the middle and side mouse buttons.
    • Click the menu bar icon to switch layouts if you like; the menu stays short and Option shows everything.
    • Pause Panevisa at any time from the menu or with a shortcut.
    • Settings are organized into General, Layouts and Displays, Workspaces, App Rules, Shortcuts and Advanced, with search for shortcuts.
    • Panevisa notices when Accessibility permission is missing or stale, shows it in the menu bar, and starts working again as soon as access returns.
    • Actions are available in the Shortcuts app.
