Install and first launch

What does Panevisa need?

Panevisa is free and runs on macOS 14 or later.

Where do I get Panevisa?

Download the latest version here. The version number and the SHA256 checksum of the file are listed below the button, so you can check what you downloaded.

Download for Mac

Free. Version 1.4.1. macOS 14 or later.

SHA256 checksum: 838e965d65be54fbb9bafa10c6dc05c206b91d2684eb2e68032906d5d5177fbf

macOS says it cannot verify Panevisa

Since version 1.3.6, Panevisa is signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple, so macOS opens it without a security warning.

If macOS still asks you to approve Panevisa, follow the first launch steps on the home page.

Run Setup again

Setup walks you through the permissions and the main keys with animated shortcut demos. It also suggests App Rules for the apps on your Mac and lets you choose a layout, the gap between windows and focus follows mouse.

Open it any time with Show Setup Again, or with Suggest Rules for My Apps in App Rules.

Permissions

Accessibility is required

Turn on Panevisa under Privacy and Security, then Accessibility, so it can move and resize your windows.

Panevisa notices when Accessibility permission is missing or stale, shows it in the menu bar and starts working again as soon as access returns.

Screen Recording is optional

Screen Recording gives smoother animations and live window previews in Overview. Without it, Panevisa still tiles everything and Overview shows app icons instead.

macOS asks for Accessibility again after an update

Open System Settings, go to Privacy and Security, then Accessibility, and turn Panevisa off and on again.

Updates

How does Panevisa update?

Panevisa keeps itself up to date. It checks for a new version shortly after launch and once a day, and you can check any time with Check for Updates in the menu.

The update window shows what changed in every version since yours, with Install and Relaunch, Remind Me Later and Skip This Version. Every download is checked against Panevisa's signature before anything is replaced, and your current copy stays in place until the new one starts.

The Updates settings in General turn automatic checking on or off, which is on by default, and automatic download and install, which is off by default. They also show the time of the last check and your current version.

What changed in each version

After an update, Panevisa shows what is new in that version once. Every release is listed in the changelog.

Troubleshooting

Windows are not tiling

Check that Accessibility is turned on for Panevisa. Without it Panevisa cannot move windows, and the menu bar icon shows that access is missing.

Check that Panevisa is not paused. While it is paused nothing moves or resizes a window, and the menu says Resume Panevisa. Choose it, or press the Pause shortcut again.

A window floats instead of tiling

Dialogs, settings windows, small popups, hotkey windows and picture in picture float by themselves, so they open where the app puts them and never rearrange your layout. Finder windows of a mounted disk image float too.

Turn this off in Settings, Windows, or press ⌃⌥F on a window to tile it anyway. An App Rule can also float or ignore an app, so check App Rules if one app never tiles.

A shortcut does nothing

Shortcuts that another app already uses are listed in Settings, Shortcuts and in the menu. Every action can have two shortcuts, using keyboard keys or mouse buttons, and you can change any of them in Settings, Shortcuts.

Overview shows app icons instead of windows

Overview needs Screen Recording to show live window previews. Turn it on for Panevisa under Privacy and Security, then Screen Recording.

Settings and privacy

Use the same settings on another Mac

Sync Settings with iCloud keeps your App Rules, shortcuts, layout, window behavior and colors the same on all your Macs. Turn it on in Settings, Advanced.

You can also export all your settings to one file and import them on another Mac. Import shows what the file contains, asks first and keeps a backup of your current settings.

Usage counts and crash reports

Setup asks about anonymous usage counts and crash reports. Crash reports are off unless you turn them on. Usage counts are off for new installs, and if you used Panevisa before, your setting stays as it was.

Change crash reports any time in Settings, General, Privacy, and usage counts with Share anonymous usage counts in Panevisa Settings.
